Thanks to many of you, French Paper Company has achieved an important milestone for a small, family-owned, American manufacturer: it's our 140th Anniversary.
We survived world wars, the Great Depression, the policies of 27 Presidents (good and bad), the electronic age, recessions, floods, earthquakes, and even a direct hit from a tornado during our first 140 years.
Although we plan to survive long into the future, 2011 has gone down as the worst year in the history of American-manufactured paper sales. As one of the few remaining independent paper mills, we've struggled like our competitors to keep our machines busy and to keep our hard-working papermakers employed.
If my great-great-grandfather J.W. French were alive today he would be shocked to learn that the manufacturing of tangible American products has become a rare and vanishing commodity. Although we see technology and communication evolving, paper is still a vital part of the mix. Unfortunately in America, an increasing percentage of the paper used is generic, shiny, clay-coated stock produced by manufacturers overseas.
